Three checks before a holiday sale

  1. Fees follow the price down, but not all of them. Percentage fees fall with a discount; fixed fees per order (eBay's $0.40, Etsy's $0.20 listing and $0.25 processing) don't, so small items lose a bigger share.
  2. Free shipping is a discount too. On eBay, Etsy and Mercari the fee is charged on item plus shipping, so moving shipping into the price doesn't change the fee, but absorbing it cuts your profit by the full postage cost.
  3. Promoted listings stack. An ad rate is charged on top of the platform fee. At 10% ad rate plus eBay's 13.6%, almost a quarter of a sale goes in fees.
